The city of Dayton is the home of the Wright Brothers and the Air Force Museum. Visitors to the museum can see hundreds of historic aircraft, including several presidential planes that had the call sign of Air Force One. On a hill in the southeast portion of the city is the Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum. It is one of the nation’s oldest garden cemeteries. It is where Orville and Wilbur were buried.
The grounds are adorned with several beautiful and unique stone markers. One of them is for the grave of Johnny Morehouse. Born in 1855, he was the youngest son of John and Mary Morehouse. His father owned a shoe repair shop in Dayton, and the family lived in an apartment attached to the back of the shop. The shop was near the Miami and Erie Canal, and on August 14th, 1861, young Johnny fell into the canal. His faithful dog tried desperately to pull him out, but the young boy died in the cold water of the canal. Johnny Moorehouse was buried at Woodland Cemetery. His loyal dog came and laid on his gravesite for several weeks after his death. A special headstone was carved depicting his dog holding him and some of his belongings, including a cap, harmonica, top and a ball. Some say the spirit of a little boy can be seen near the gravesite. I am not sure about that, but visitors moved by his tragic tale leave flowers and little toys at his tombstone
